The PWCLP provides clients with legal information, brief service, and referrals concerning a wide range of legal topics, including family law, landlord-tenant issues, immigration , child protection, welfare and benefits, and much more. The Phyllis Wheatley Community Lawyering Project provides access to legal assistance and information through the three programs below.
In collaboration with Volunteer Lawyers Network, this clinic runs every Thursday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Two volunteer attorneys and two law students are available to meet in person with low-income clients seeking legal advice, information, and referrals.
Volunteer attorneys give presentations concerning civil and criminal legal topics as part of the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center Programs for youth, parents, and seniors. This allows PWCLP to provide larger groups helpful information about specific legal topic areas, ranging from landlord-tenant and employment law, to child protection and criminal defense issues.
Every six months, seasoned public interest attorneys give presentations revealing common myths, misconceptions, and realities in the fields of housing, criminal defense, child protection, and immigration law. After these brief presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for free ten-minute legal advice sessions with the attorneys.
